How to Play the Dice Board Game? Roll or Dare Rules
Dice board games are based on a simple cycle: roll the dice, move forward, do what the square tells you. Roll or Dare adds 1000+ tasks, a point system, monsters, mini games and a Fate Wheel to this cycle. Learning the rules takes two minutes; by the end of the first round nobody asks about rules.
Match setup: one minute
When the game opens, you get match settings first. Four choices are made here, everything else is automatic:
- Mode: Classic (everyone for themselves) or Team (Red–Blue).
- Board: City (simple, fast) or Adventure Island (52 squares, special squares, monsters).
- Task categories: Family (all ages), Party (friend gatherings) and Bold (18+). Turn on whatever you want.
- Number of rounds: Each player rolls the dice this many times. Default is 3; reduce for large groups, increase for small ones.
Then players are added: 2–10 people, names, and a piece chosen from 12 characters (cat, penguin, ninja, yeti, cactus…). In team mode, players are split into two teams.
The game's basic cycle
- Roll the dice — The player whose turn it is taps the dice on screen; the die bounces in the player's color.
- Move forward — The piece automatically walks the rolled number of squares.
- Do the task — A task card opens based on the square you landed on. If you did it, press I Did It, if you couldn't, I Couldn't.
- Collect points — If the task was done, the square's points are added; if not, no points, turn passes. No extra penalty.
- Joker — Didn't like the task? Use your joker, get a new one. For timed tasks, Start Timer runs the countdown automatically.
Squares and points
On normal squares, the task gives points equal to the square's value: low-point squares bring warm-up tasks everyone can do easily, high-point squares take a little courage. Adventure Island adds special squares:
Two more bonuses exist: a player who completes three tasks in a row gets a streak bonus and each time you pass the finish line you get a lap bonus .
What do monsters do?
- 🍄 Mushroom King gives a gift.
- 🐸 Frog swaps your position with another player.
- 👹 Orc takes tribute from your points.
- 🐉 Dragon breathes fire on the leader, leader loses points.
- 👻 Ghost sends you backward on the board.
Monsters only appear in monster lairs, but can also rarely pop up on regular task squares. If it disrupts the pace, turn off Monsters in match settings.
How many people play?
The game works on one phone with 2 to 10 players. With two players, the pace is fast but task variety drops; the most efficient range is 4–7 players. For groups of ten, the turn length stretches, so reducing round count or switching to team mode gives better results: points accumulate for teams, and everyone stays in the game even while waiting their turn.
Scoring and game end
Each completed task gives points equal to the square's value; double on gold squares, +30 to the winner in duels, bonuses for streaks. When the match setting's round count is up, the game ends and the podium appears: first, second, third; confetti, fun end-game rewards, and rematch with one tap. Player stats accumulate across matches.
Small tweaks that make the game better
- Set the round count by group size: fewer for large groups, more for small ones.
- Play the first game on City board; when the group grasps the cycle, switch to Adventure Island.
- In family settings, keep only Family category on; Party and Bold (18+) have adult tasks.
- Add your group's inside jokes to the task pool with Custom Tasks ; often the night's most-laughed-at tasks are these.
- Don't add penalties when tasks are skipped; joker and I Couldn't already keep the pace.
