How to Play Okey? Tiles, Runs, and Finishing Rules
Okey is a tile-rearranging game played by four people. The goal is to turn your 14 tiles into valid sequences and groups and finish the hand. The rules look crowded at first but fit into three headings: tiles, making runs, and finishing.
Tiles and distribution
The deck has tiles numbered 1 to 13 in four colors (yellow, blue, black, red), two each. Add two fake Okey tiles (jokers) and you have 106 tiles total.
- Each player gets 14 tiles; the starting player gets 15.
- The remaining tiles sit face-down in the middle as the deck.
- The tile flipped from the top of the deck is the indicator .
How is the joker tile determined?
The number one higher than the indicator tile, in the same color, becomes the joker. If the indicator is yellow 5, the joker is yellow 6. If the indicator is 13, the joker is 1 of the same color.
Fake Okey (joker) tiles substitute for the joker tile. The joker tile itself can stand in for any tile you want.
Runs: sequences and groups
To finish your hand you must separate your tiles into valid combinations. There are two types of valid combination:
- Sequence: At least three consecutive tiles of the same color — yellow 4, yellow 5, yellow 6.
- Group: At least three tiles of the same number in different colors — blue 7, black 7, red 7.
- The same color cannot appear twice in a group.
- In a sequence, 13 is not followed by 1; 1 is only used at the start of a sequence.
How does the turn order work?
The player whose turn it is either draws a tile from the face-down deck in the middle or takes the tile the player to their left discarded. Then they discard a tile to pass the turn to the player on their right. Throughout the hand, you always hold 14 tiles; a 15th tile is drawn to be discarded.
Finishing the hand
- When all 14 tiles form valid runs and you have a tile left to discard, the hand finishes.
- The player who finishes discards their last tile face-down.
- Finishing with the joker tile (discarding the joker) usually earns double points.
- Double finish (all tiles arranged in pairs) is a separate form of finishing.
Three tips for beginners
- Early in the hand, decide which run you'll build; going back and forth between two different plans is the biggest tile-wasting mistake.
- Track the tiles in the middle; discarded tiles show which sequences are closing.
- Save your joker tile for where you need it last; using it early removes flexibility.
