How to Set Up a Futsal League? Fixtures, Standings, and Rules
The hard part of setting up a league with friends isn't playing matches; it's generating the fixture, tracking points, and avoiding mid-season arguments about "how many games have I played." A well-set-up league runs itself.
1. Calculate match count by team number
In a single-round league, each team plays every other team once. Total match count is found with the formula n×(n−1)/2, where n is the team count.
- 4 teams → 6 matches (double round-robin 12)
- 6 teams → 15 matches (double round-robin 30)
- 8 teams → 28 matches (double round-robin 56)
- 10 teams → 45 matches (double round-robin 90)
2. Set the week count and pace
How many matches you can play a week depends on how many times you book the court. An eight-team single-round league at two matches per week runs 14 weeks. For friend groups, that's usually long; single-round + play-off format finishes more often than double-round.
Be careful that no one team plays more than one match per week; fatigue hurts match quality and participation.
3. Write down scoring and ranking rules
- Win 3, draw 1, loss 0 (standard).
- On a tie, in order: goal difference, goals for, head-to-head result.
- Set the forfeit score upfront (e.g., 3-0).
- Write down the minimum player requirement (e.g., at least 5 players).
4. Calculate goal difference correctly
Goal difference is goals for minus goals against. A team that scores 20 and concedes 12 over eight matches has a +8 difference. Some leagues use goal ratio instead, but for friend leagues, difference is both clearer and dispute-free.
5. Keep records throughout the season
The most common mid-season problem: losing track of who's played how many games. Entering scores right after each match and keeping standings visible to everyone solves this completely.
Exporting the standings and fixture as a PDF at season's end serves as both an archive and planning material for next season.
Not building the fixture by hand
League & Tournament Maker: when you enter teams, it auto-generates the fixture, updates standings and goal difference as you enter scores, and can generate an elimination bracket too. All three formats—league, elimination, and group stage—are supported, and results can be shared as PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many matches in a 6-team league?
Single-round format: 15 matches. Double-round: 30. Formula: team count × (team count − 1) ÷ 2.
How is ranking decided if points are tied?
Common ranking: first goal difference, then goals for, then head-to-head result. Writing this rule at season start prevents later arguments.
Is single-round or double-round better?
In friend groups, single-round + play-off format finishes more often. Double-round takes so long that participation tends to drop mid-season.
