Spinning Game for a House Party: Rules and Scoring (18+)
This content is for readers 18 and older. It is for informational and entertainment purposes; it is not advice about betting, alcohol consumption, or similar topics.
Spinner-based party games work very well in large groups because they make undisputed decisions about what happens. Below is a rule set that works for 2–12 person house parties — playable both in the classic version and in an alcohol-free version.
Setup: players and difficulty levels
Add the players and decide which difficulty levels the spinner will have. A five-tier structure works for most groups: very easy, easy, medium, hard, very hard. As difficulty increases, both the task gets more challenging and the points grow bigger.
- If the group has just met, keep the high levels locked for the first half hour.
- When player count exceeds 8, shorten the round time.
- Give everyone one pass right at the game start.
How does a turn work?
The next player spins the spinner. The spinner stops at a difficulty level and a random task from that level opens. The player has two choices: complete the task and take the points, or skip the task and accept the penalty.
In the classic version, the penalty is a shot; in the alcohol-free version, it's a point loss, double task next turn, or a small consequence defined by the group. Both maintain the same game balance.
Scoring
- Task completed → add the difficulty level's points.
- Task skipped → no points, penalty applies.
- Pass used → no points, no penalty (once per game).
- The game ends when a player reaches the target score or a set number of rounds passes.
Why is a weighted spinner better?
With an evenly-sliced spinner, hard tasks come more often than expected and the group gets tired in the first ten minutes. When slice width is weighted — for example, easy tasks get a wide slice, very hard tasks a narrow one — the game balances itself. Because hard tasks are rare, when they do come up, they're really an event.
5 rules for playing responsibly
- This game is 18+; play the alcohol version only with adults.
- Define an alcohol-free penalty option for players who don't want to drink.
- Never pressure anyone to drink; pass rights are always valid.
- Have water and snacks on the table.
- People who will drive should play the alcohol-free version of the game.
Letting the app handle the spinner and score
Shot Spinner brings together the player list, weighted spinner, five difficulty levels, and a live scoreboard on one screen. You don't have to keep track of whose turn it is and who's ahead by how many points — it works with 2 to 12 players.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this game be played without alcohol?
Yes. Using point loss, double task, or a small group-defined consequence instead of a shot as the penalty doesn't break the game's balance.
How many people play?
2 to 12 players. In groups of 6–10, the pace is at its highest.
What do difficulty levels do?
Each level sets both the task's challenge and the points you can earn. In a weighted spinner where hard tasks are less likely, the game doesn't tire the group early.
